The Arts on Wednesdays - Youth Zone

We are excited to welcome a team of professional artists and young artists from the London Arts Council to the Club. They will deliver sessions weekly on Wednesdays that focus on music production, songwriting, and Glee Club.

The sessions are planned for children in Grades 1 to 8, and high school age youth and are adjusted accordingly to skill and age level.

For youth, each session will show them the possibilities of the music industry! This includes fun activities in music making (beat, production, songwriting, mixing), performance (learning instruments of their choosing/musicality), and the program can adapt and expand based on their interests.

For tweens, each session will teach them about songs in a way that’s fun, interactive, and will teach them how to write songs of their own.

For children, we have a Glee Club.

Sessions are held on Wednesdays

3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. for youth (Grades 9 to 12) - Music Production

5:00 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. for tweens (Grades 6 to 8) - Song Writing

6:00 p.m. to 6:50 p.m. for children (Grades 1 to 8) - Glee Club

The Breakdown

Music Production

Week 1

• Icebreakers and introductions, learn about what genres of music youth like and their musical experience.
• Introduce the youth to some of the software will be used (ex. Garageband, ProTools First).
• Bring some examples of Instructors' personal work and talk about their careers in music so far, and some of the possibilities that exist in the music industry.
• Have the youth show Instructors music they are passionate about, and explain why they’re passionate about that music. Tell the Instructors what they would really like to learn about making music, and the music industry.
• Collaboratively decide on projects based on the skills of the group.

The program will adapt to the youths' own interests instead of sticking to a planned curriculum.

We will create a consistent plan once the youth participants have settled into a format they like and enjoy.

Song Writing

Anatomy of a song - this unit will teach Tweens about songs in a way that’s fun, interactive, and will teach them how to write songs of their own.
Week 1 Stories
• Read lyrics of songs.
• Explore and discuss what you think the lyrics are about.
• Teach how your own stories can become songs and art.
• 5-minute song challenge.
Week 2 Song Structure

• What is an intro?
• What is a verse?
• What is a hook?
• What is a chorus?
• 5-minute song challenge.
Week 3 Classic Songs
• What music your parents listen and what do you think about it?
• Listen to classic songs and discuss what you liked or didn't like about it.
• Sing-a-long - "We Will Rock You" by Queen.
• 5-minute song challenge.
Week 4 Stories v. 2.0
• Battle of the Bands!

Use the full class time to collaboratively write a song in small groups. Your group will also be performing it.

Glee Club

The Glee Club will learn one new song every week in this program, which will then be added to a “repertoire” of music that can be used in a performance after the program has had a few months to breathe. The song learning and arranging process will become progressively more complex over the course of the program, starting with learning songs in a very basic way and eventually adding elements such as harmony, solos, and dynamics.
