M.A.P. Program Highlights

  • Horizons Campaign Mission Statement: Breaking the Cycle of Poverty through Education
  • Currently the High School drop out rate in London is 33%. The provincial average is 28%. After the introduction of the Pathways Program (a comparable education support program) in Regent Park, Toronto, the drop out rate fell from 56% to 19%
  • The goal of the MAP program is to help 100 at risk children and youth from grades 4 to grade 12 and post secondary : 
  • Junior Level (Elementary School) – tutoring in core subjects, math, English and reading, educational support funding for schools supplies, clothing, bus pass 
  • Intermediate Level – tutoring, mentoring (course selection), $1000 scholarship put in trust for each year of high school they complete while on the program
  • Senior – tutoring, mentoring (career counseling) potentially $4000 in scholarship funds available for post-secondary education per student graduating High School, educational support funds for bus pass, books, clothing etc
  • MAP To Excellence program – possible scholarship opportunities, help in accessing other available scholarships nationally (through other institutions) educational support funds for the purchase of books, tools, equipment and fees
  • The MAP program is being praised for partnering with the family, and teachers in helping to ensure the success of each child. Parent seminars and workshops on a variety of issues are offered to parents, including parent support group, health, time management, crisis management, budgeting and financial management. The goal is to increase the interaction between parents and their children by 25%
  • The program kicks off October 2008. 30 youth have been chosen for the first phase of program development (Intermediate and Senior students) The second phase of the program will focus on the Junior level.
  • Tutoring will be provided for program participants 6 days a week at the Boys & Girls Club. Volunteers from the UWO Faculty of Education, Ivey Business School, Fanshawe will work with students in core subjects. The Retired Teacher Association is also being approached as a possible source of tutors.
  • The MAP program is an opportunity for many corporations to involve their employees. Employee Participation is an important factor as part of their charitable giving programs.
  • The Mentoring program will be a key component for the Senior level and helping students choose the career path for them that will lead to their success.
  • Partnerships for the MAP Program implementation have been formed with other organizations including:
    • Children’s Aid Society 
    • Thames Valley Board of Education Student Success Teachers
    • Fanshawe College o UWO – Ivey School of Business
    • Frontier College
  • Currently the program costs are budgeted at $150,000. This will rise to $300,000 when the full cohort of 100 youth is met and the program is at full capacity.
